You know one thing that’s great about our current slate of LPGA pros?
We can see a bit of ourselves in so many of them!
Yeah, yeah. Maybe we don’t have that flawless swing. Or that unbelievably low handicap. Or that near-supernatural ability to read breaks on the green.
But hey! We are looking at career women. Women — some of them — who juggle jobs and families. Women who need to project confidence, success, and femininity — all at the same time.
Leta Lindley is one such woman.
A 1994 graduate of the University of Arizona, this will be her 15th year on the pro tour. She’s earned her bona fides as a golfer, including last year’s (sudden death, one-hole playoff!) win at the 2008 LPGA Corning Classic.
She’s also won recognition for her off-course poise and character: last month, she received the LPGA Heather Farr Player Award, established to honor the memory of Farr, who died of breast cancer in 1993.
But that’s not all, of course. Leta is also a mother of two, placing her squarely in that special category: LPGA career moms. This also means that, like so many of us, she has days when she’s pulled in multiple directions at once — you can bet on it!
Lifestyle apparel . . . it helps!
It should come as no surprise, then, that when it comes to golf clothing, Leta found her perfect match in LIJA.
Founded by Canadian entrepreneur Linda Hipp, LIJA’s goal is apparel with those “must-have” qualities we look for in our golf outfits: the fit is designed to allow free range of motion; the look is stylish and versatile enough to be worn off the course.
So when we saw that LIJA had named Leta its “Tour Style Leaders” Grand Prize Winner this spring, we decided to ask her to tell us more about why she likes LIJA. Here’s what she had to say.
WomenGolfApparel: LIJA describes itself as a “lifestyle brand.” When you pick golf apparel, how important is it to you to wear something that works both on and off the course?
Leta: As a mom, wife and professional golfer, life can get a little hectic so it’s essential to have clothing that isn’t specific to any one activity. LIJA is designed with a busy woman’s life in mind, and whether I’m on the first tee or out to dinner, I know I look great in the brand, which allows me to relax and enjoy what I’m doing.
WGA: What are the advantages of apparel that can adapt to off-course wear?
Leta: It’s easy and convenient. I love to have one wardrobe that works for everything, and that’s exactly what LIJA does for me. I don’t have to go to ten different stores to find clothes that fit for my everyday life and my golf appearances.
WGA: How does the cut and fabric of LIJA apparel compare to other golf apparel you’ve tried?
Leta: With a lot of golf lines, especially in shorts and polos, the cuts are too boxy, and I can’t find anything that fits and is flattering. LIJA is very sophisticated and works to accentuate my femininity.
WGA: Are there any particular pieces from LIJA’s 2009 collection that are your favorites or that you’re most excited about, and if so, why?
Leta: I really love LIJA’s bottoms. The spring collections have a lot of fun prints, and everything runs true to size so the fit is perfect. Some of the styles I’m really exited to wear are those with the new Glitzy fabric — it’s definitely fashion-forward for the course, and I can easily wear them out to brunch or a reception.
WGA: What tournaments are coming up for you — and if you’ve planned what you’ll wear, what have you chosen?
Leta: I’m really looking forward to the J Golf Phoenix LPGA International — I’m from the area originally and it’s always fun to go home for a few days. In March, it will still be cool in the morning, so layers are going to be a must. A couple of my favorite LIJA pieces for that type of environment are the Twist Knit Crooner Pullover, Classic Allure Vest, Smooch Mae West Polo, Terra Vibe Knee Shorts and the Glossy Virginia Capri.
WGA: So many women golfers are also working moms! Do you have any tips for us on how to juggle family and career?
Leta: Try to keep everything in perspective. So much of it is knowing what’s most important. I love having my family there with me, supporting me on the course. I also love being there to tuck my kids into bed at night. It’s all about balance.
WGA: Thanks so much, Leta! We’ll be looking for you in Phoenix* — and we wish you the best on the 2009 tour.
You can purchase LIJA golf clothing through the company’s website. LIJA is also carried by pro shops and specialty retailers.
* The J Golf Phoenix LPGA International is March 26-29 and will be carried live on The Golf Channel.
