Ooooh la la! The Little Black Golf Dress ;-)Mar 13th, 2009 | By Editor | Category: Features, In The Hole!
Ever since Vogue ran a picture of a simple, calf-length, black Coco Chanel dress in 1926, the Little Black Dress has been a wardrobe staple. And we gals can tick off the reasons, can’t we? That wonderful versatility. The way the LBD can be both flattering and understated — elegant yet (dare we say it?) just a little bit dangerous :-)
And here at WomenGolfApparel.com, we can’t think of a better place to be understated-but-dangerous than on the golf course!
So count us in. We’re emphatic supporters of The Little Black Golf Dress.
That’s not to take anything away from The Golf Dress In Other Colors — tag-teamed as a hot new golf fashion trend this year. We’re busily picking dresses for our golf outfit rotation right now.
But The Little Black Golf Dress — she’s a creature that goes beyond trends. A bona fide golf fashion statement. And she can be an elusive creature, girlfriends! We had to do some serious net-sleuthing to track down some examples to share!
Sleek and chic from Golf Italia Couture
But we did it — and here’s a great place to start — a true golf fashion take on a classic. It’s the Jackie Pro from Golf Italia Couture. We love how it combines a racer back (nice for swimsuit friendly tan lines!) with a more traditional collared neckline. The fabric is Tactel — a lightweight nylon that is so stretchy, you put this dress on like you would a pullover sweater. But the feel of the fabric is like silk. Mmmmm!
Other features of this dress include a drop-fitted waistline, a pleat in front — and a bralette inside so you don’t have to worry about wandering straps.
Urban style from Quagmire
One reason the LBD is a perennial favorite? Designers continually find ways to give it a fresh new attitude.
So it’s no surprise that in the world of golf fashion, a certain hip young company from Canada has given The Little Black Golf Dress a very 21st century makeover.
The Kelli Dress is one of Quagmire’s best sellers, says company co-founder Geoff Tait (who, btw, credits Quagmire’s LPGA players — Kelli Keuhne, Nicole Hage and Stephanie Louden — with showing the world that golf dresses are here to stay :-)).
The Kelli Dress fabric is a moisture-wicking stretch poly/spandex material that is easy to wash. The cut ensures it’s a very un-restrictive golf outfit — many Quagmire customers tell Geoff that its easier to swing in a Quagmire dress than in shirts and shorts.
But above all, the Kelli Dress captures an urban style that makes it perfect for not only the golf course, but the pool, the beach, or out on the town.
Adidas goes athletic, of course!
The big name athletic apparel designers have also gotten into the Little Black Golf Dress action.
This year it’s adidas Golf with their new Formotion dress.
As you’d expect from adidas, the emphasis in this dress is performance: the fabric is a 95 percent polyester/5 percent Lycra Coolmax Extreme french terry.
But adidas Golf doesn’t scrimp on design either, of course. This dress’s touches include a self collar and shaped cuffs and hem. Ooh, and mesh under arm panels so you can keep as cool as you look :-)
Confident elegance: Carter Humphrey
We had to finish with this little number: the Tabitha dress from Carter Humphrey.
The Tabitha is made of mill-washed satin fabric that is moisture-wicking, stain-resistant and offers UV protection.
But what we love the most is the styling. There’s something irresistible about a golf shirt dress, isn’t there? And this one’s got tortoise shell buttons. Classic.
We also appreciate its two over-sized pockets for our tees and pencils.
So ends our tour of The Little Black Golf Dress. But we suspect there are more out there. Have you found one you like? Drop us a note and let us know — we’ll pop up a pic and a link !
