The loveliest glovesMay 7th, 2009 | By Editor | Category: Features
We might be competitive as tigresses on the course, but we women golfers appreciate pretty things, don’t we!
So isn’t this nice? You can walk right past those utilitarian, unisex gloves you see in every pro shop and sporting goods store and instead pick a golf glove that is elegant, and feminine, and matches the color of your favorite golf outfit!
The designer is Fairway Skins, a company founded by two girlfriends, Marje Helfet and Annalisa Sullivan, in 2005. Fairway Skins offers two lines of gloves today. One features floral prints. The other features butterflies. The company also offers matching leather pouches.
We were entranced the second we laid eyes on them — so we were thrilled when Marje agreed to tell us about the gloves AND pair up with us to offer a free glove giveway to one of our site visitors (contest runs through May 31, 2009).

WomenGolfApparel.com: Marje, your floral print gloves feature designs that came from London’s Museum of Natural History?
Marje: The original idea was to make women’s gloves attractive. I think early botanical designs are beautiful and could lend themselves nicely to the back of a glove. It turned out that the museum in London owned some of the rights to the designs we liked.
WGA: Tell us a bit more about those images. What is their history?
Marje: Several of the designs are from the 1800s and one or two are from the 1700s.
WGA: What year did you add the butterfly images to your glove line?
Marje: The butterflies were added in late spring of 2008. We recognized that florals were part of our identity. To add to that image we presented butterflies resting or flying about flowers as an added splash of color and design.
WGA: Are the butterfly images from the same source?
Marje: No, the butterfly images were all created by my partner, Annalisa Sullivan.
WGA: Would you say your original hunch—that women would love to wear more of a “fashion glove”—was right?
Marje: Yes! My hunch was corret. Women are fashion and color sensitive. Everyone loves our gloves.
WGA: How has the business been for you?
Marje: The most challenging part has been to get a loyal, hard working group of sales reps. I have had several that have been with me for awhile but it is like painting the Golden Gate Bridge . . . you can’t ever stop painting or hiring.
WGA: Your gloves are made from Cabretta leather. What IS Cabretta leather, exactly, and why did you specify it for your gloves?
Marje: Cabretta leather is the softest, most supple leather there is. It comes from a type of sheep that actually has hair instead of wool. We chose it because it is forgiving yet very durable.
WGA: What else should our readers know about your company and your gloves?
Marje: I like to think of us as a very user friendly company. For instance, we will freely exchange sizes. If women golfers want to offer our gloves as tournament prizes, we’ll ship out 20 percent more gloves than needed so that everyone can get the size and design they like. The golf clubs can then send back the extras at no additional charge. We also include a great looking display box with orders of three dozen or more.
As for our gloves, frankly, they are stunning and elegant. They are made of the finest, most supple leather available — when you put one on, the word “wow” just pops out of your mouth. Buying a Fairway Skins glove, in my opinion, is an easy choice!
